Mark Saxon - Board of Commissioners, Post #4

Family

First and foremost, my family is the driving force for my commitment to becoming a better citizen and better person when representing you. Marie, my wife of 28 years, and a lifelong resident of Oconee County and 30 year High School teacher, will retire at the end of this school year.  I'm proud of her committment to young minds and her dedication to make a difference.  My sons, Mack (24) and Mason (20), are becoming productive citizens that make me proud to be a father. Mack is playing on the semi-pro golf circuit in Georgia and Florida and Mason is a rising senior at Point University also enjoying golf as a scholarship member of the golf team.

Commissioner

Since I was elected to the Commission, I have worked hard to become more informed at what goes on in county government and especially in Oconee County.  I know that sounds kind of funny, but thinking you have it all figured out before you take office is just not realistic. I completed the Georgia Certified County Commissioners Training Program in record time.  I was determined to complete this voluntary certification the same year I was elected. This valuable training program vastly improved my knowledge of county government and linked me to other commissioners and experts across the state.  I regularly call on these folks to help make me a more professional servant to the county.

I continue to work hard to be a better commissioner.  This April, at the state Annual convention, I will receive my first certificate in the Advanced Course of Instruction in County Operations and Administration.  I have completed numerous other courses as well and look forward to completing all courses in order to complete the entire Advanced Course curriculum.  I'm also proud to have grown my educational foundation by completing the courses required to receive my Associate Degree in Criminal Justice in May 2014.

I currently serve the community in the following positions:

  • Hard Labor Creek Management Board Member
  • Upper Oconee Water Basin Authority Alternate Member
  • ACCG Legislative Leaderhship Conference Voting Delegate
  • Oconee Area Resounce Council Mentor

Community and Youth Commitment

I coached and worked with young kids in the Oconee community for over 16 years beginning when my oldest son, Mack, turned four years old.  I've previously been actively involved with Little League Baseball, the Oconee Parks and Recreation Department, and various travel baseball programs. I was also involved with the Malcolm Bridge middle school cross country team, football, and the track and field team.  I also previously ran the scoreboard at North Oconee High football games as well as volunteer with the North Oconee State Champion Golf team.

When I wasn't coaching I spent several years as a teen driving instructor.
